Recuva is a free software for Windows to undelete files, including those removed from the Recycle bin as well as photos, videos and other media files that have been deleted by error from digital camera SD cards, USB sticks, or MP3 players. Recuva restores unsaved emails and Word files, and it can bring back files deleted by viruses, bugs and crashes. It will even unearth files from newly formatted, corrupted and damaged discs.
On the other hand, Recuva is capable of deleting files permanently, using its Overwrite military-standard deletion technique, so they're unrecoverable even by Recuva itself — be careful with this one!
Recuva is installable as a portable app so that you will be able to load it onto a USB stick and utilize on multiple PCs.
How It Works
Files are not erased instantly when you push ‘Delete’ button. Instead, the space they occupy is flagged as available to be overwritten.
A simple wizard will guide you through the process. Although you can run a deep scan for all files deleted, there is an option to perform a scan for specific files by providing info such as file name, file type, date of deletion, etc.
Once it has scanned the system, Recuva shows — with traffic light colors — how likely it can recover each file it has found. Give a chance to yellow and red files as well, since their damage might be repairable.
